Laptop's built-in network adapter failed...what's the best alternative to connect to a wireless network?

My HP Pavillion DV6000 built-in wireless network card crapped out on me and no long works. I was wondering what the best solution would be to connect to my wireless network. I don't think there is a bus adapter, but there is a slot where the wireless remote is stored that appears as though a wireless card would fit. I'm weary of getting a usb adapter as I hear they are incredibly slow.
