Is it possible to deactivate a supercharger on a running engine?

Like in the movie "The Road Warrior". Mel Gibson's character is able to turn off the supercharger on his car to save fuel. It is activated by a switch and relay of some sort. Is this S/C byp valve actually feasible? I imagine you would need a second throttle body to completely byp the impellers and a second fuel map for less compression. Anyone heard of, or seen this in real life?
