Can I stick ceramic tiles over existing ceramic tiles?

I would like to update the look of my fireplace. My fireplace sits on a step that is covered with what looks like 2" ceramic bath tiles. I would like to cover the bath tiles with 18" ceramic floor tiles. Can I put the tile adhesive directly over the bath tiles and go for it?
